Dr. Chenshu Zhou (she, her, hers) is Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies in the History of Art Department and Cinema and Media Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

I am the author of Cinema Off Screen: Moviegoing in Socialist China (UC Press, 2021), which won the 2022 Best First Book Award from the Society of Cinema and Media Studies. In the book, I argue for the importance of non-filmic interfaces in cinematic experiences through a historical investigation of film exhibition and moviegoing in socialist China (1949-1992).

I hold a PhD from the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department at Stanford University. With broad training in film and media studies and Chinese art and cultural history, my research explores a variety of questions related to the moving images, in particular spectatorship, exhibition, and temporality.
